Momma Bear Course: Master Self-Defense for Moms

Over the years, I’ve grown increasingly frustrated with what’s been offered as women’s self-defense. Women—especially moms with children—have very different needs and capabilities than the average man. Yet, self-defense is often framed around firearms as the first and only solution. While firearms are excellent tools for those who can and choose to carry them, what about the mom who is on school property several times a week and legally cannot? Even for those who do carry, a gun is the nuclear option—many women opt out for various reasons. That doesn’t mean they should be defenseless.

As a husband of 30 years and a dad for 28, I understand this firsthand. My oldest daughter, Emilie, is 23 but has special needs and functions at about a 7-year-old level. My wife, Lisa, is her primary caregiver and frequently out and about alone with her. In those situations, Lisa’s top priority isn’t her own self-defense—it’s keeping Emilie safe. That requires a completely different mindset and skill set.

This understanding led to the creation of the Momma Bear Program at Templars Tactical. It’s built on three core principles: Awareness, Avoidance, and Aggression. Just like a mother bear protecting her cubs, moms must be keenly aware of their surroundings to avoid threats whenever possible. But when avoidance isn’t an option, swift and decisive aggression may be the key to survival. Hesitation and self-defense tactics based on theory or emotion can be deadly. Moms need to know exactly what to do—and when to do it.

Our Intro to Momma Bear Course is an intensive three-hour session that teaches these essential principles in a practical, no-nonsense way. It can be held anywhere, with any number of women. Those who complete it can advance to specialized courses such as Vehicle Tactics, Spontaneous Attack Survival, Contact Distance Pistol, and Home Defense—all tailored to the unique needs of women.
