Free Self-Defense Course for Kids Aged 8-12

Hello all, this is my first post. If this is not allowed, please remove and my apologies in advance.

Every year in the United States, between 4,000 and 8,400 children are abducted. As a parent and retired police officer, I find that number terrifying—because even one is too many. Statistics show that if a child isn’t recovered within the first 24 hours, the chances of finding them drop significantly.

When my daughter was about six years old, she was very active in Judo. One day, I asked her what she would do if someone tried to take her. She confidently replied, “I’d throw them.” That’s when I realized we had a problem.

Many well-meaning parents enroll their children in martial arts for three primary reasons: to build confidence, instill discipline and self-control, and teach self-defense. However, when it comes to real-world self-defense, there are two major issues. First, many techniques taught—or the way they are practiced—aren’t designed for real-life situations but rather to ensure no one gets hurt, so schools can continue collecting tuition. Second, kids typically only train with others of the same age, size, and experience level. These factors won’t prepare them to face an adult predator with a plan.

In a real attack, children and even adults tend to instinctively pound their attacker with closed fists—an ineffective response against a larger, stronger assailant. Our kids need better options. That’s why I developed the Tough Kids Program—a focused, two-hour course built around three critical components: Awareness, Avoidance, and Aggression.

Many children hesitate to defend themselves out of fear of getting in trouble. This program teaches them to recognize when they are in real danger and gives them the tools to react decisively. In those moments, they only have seconds—so what they do must work immediately.

This course is completely free, provided by Templars Tactical, and is designed for kids ages 8-12 (with exceptions for slightly younger or older children on a case-by-case basis). We’re happy to bring this training to churches, schools, businesses, and other community groups.
