Advice for a new sponsee

I shared this with a newer sponsee this morning:

Read your Bible daily. In my experience, it’s less about exactly what you read and more about the condition of your heart when you approach it. Think of it like having coffee with the Most High—relax, enjoy His presence, and soak it in.

Spend 5–10 minutes in the Word each morning. After that, read 3–5 pages from 3–5 other good books. We’ve got to make up for the time we lost and grow into men who are more intelligent, well-rounded, and better equipped to defend our faith. The Bible, along with other enriching subjects, gives our minds something positive to chew on—something to replace the rumination, fear, and worry that used to dominate our thoughts.

What you focus on is where you’ll go—just like riding a bike. So during your study time, keep a pen and notebook nearby. Jot down anything that stirs your spirit. Those thoughts can lead to powerful journal entries later.

And if you’re a dad, think about this: imagine your kid—especially if they were older—coming to you every morning, sitting cross-legged on the floor, looking up at you and saying, “I love you. I just want to be with you. Tell me what you think is important for me to know today so I can live a better, more peaceful life.”

That’s what we’re doing when we sit with our Heavenly Father every morning.
